MetaDesign created the brand positioning and identity for Inkling, an innovative new business that has developed the world’s first end-to-end platform for mobile learning.

Inkling isn’t about books on a screen. It’s about redefining how people work with learning content and improving how they learn. Inkling puts everything students needs for their academic life together in one place, bringing rich interactivity and social interaction to the iPad. This new platform will change the way an entire generation learns.
MetaDesign worked with the Inkling team to develop brand positioning and an identity that embodies and articulates this revolutionary approach to learning. The identity represents Inkling’s mission with a design based on the concept of revelation and builds upon the idea of “an inkling or slight notion.” True to the company’s brand promise, the design evokes a sense of awakening curiosity and wonder.
Guidelines were created that allowed Inkling’s in-house design team to further extend the new identity to additional communication channels.
In addition, MetaDesign specified a photography style that outlines how the iPad should be shot in relation to the student, and what environments best convey a compelling image of mobile learning.
Inkling was founded to meet the changing needs of publishers, educators, and students in an emerging medium. The platform delivers engaging interactive textbooks that feature powerful social collaboration, integrated multimedia, and instant learner feedback and support.

The concept was based on the idea that Inkling makes it easier for every learner to realize his or her unique potential by awakening curiosity. The new identity reflects the premise that as we attempt to learn something, much of the information remains concealed at first, beckoning our interest and enticing us to look deeper to discover it.
The new identity appears in multiple touchpoints, in both online and offline environments. The gradation from blue to green, as well as the partially concealed letters of the wordmark, further convey the concept of revelation.

Brand guidelines were developed to ensure consistent application of the Inkling logo and photography across all touch points. The photography style shows the learning mobility enabled by Inkling applications through the perspective of product users in various environments.

Inkling uses multitouch interactivity to create engaging learning experiences. Rather than replicating a book on a screen, Inkling puts 3-D objects, video, quizzes, and even social interaction right at a student’s fingertips inside the textbook.

“MetaDesign helped us define and develop our core brand attributes and delivered a design that is evocative and sophisticated. Our identity will set us apart in this exciting new market.”
